IN MEMORIUM
Gerry Cook (aka Eso-Garyos) Mar. 7, 1955 - Oct. 27, 2003
Gerry Cook, a reenactor of the highest calibre and the leader of the Seven Nations Native reenacting unit, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly the evening of October 27, at the tender age of 48.
Gerry was the real thing in more ways than one. Several years ago, I asked him about "Ezo-Garyos", and he wrote this to me:
Eso-Garyos is my Mohawk name. It means "Many Kills". It was given to me by Mohawk warriors from my mothers clan. I am Kahnawake by blood on my mothers side." |
But beyond that, his representation of a Native warrior was really him, and I can only imagine how much he loved being that person. I was honored that Gerry, from the start of my reenacting experience, considered me a friend. At the Lake George Tactical in 2001, Gerry was the one who said, "Give us Chauncey and we'll let you live" (while we had them pinned down). Gerry made reenacting special, not only for his people but for me and many other people I know. I am shocked and deeply saddened. I and many, many others will miss him but I know his spirit will be with us.
Napowset. Long may you walk.
