Hear Ye Hear Ye: Reenactors, Sutlers & period Craft Demonstrators!

Please join us to commemorate

The 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Kittanning

On September 8th 1756, John Armstrong led 307 members of the Pennsylvania Militia in an attack on the native village of Kittanning in an attempt to recapture the estimated 100 British subjects held captive there and destroy the village used as a base of operations by Shingas and Captain Jacob and other French allied natives in their attacks on the frontiers, forts and settlements of Pennsylvania, New York and Virginia.

The weekend of Sept 8-10 2006 marks the 250th anniversary of this attack that some historians call the only successful offensive action conducted by the Colony of Pennsylvania during the entire French and Indian War.

The organizers of this event, in conjunction with those participating in the 125 mile trek from Ft. Shirley to Kittanning, request the honor of your participation in this French & Indian War Era Encampment to help us recreate 4 “historically accurate” battles and four scripted scenarios designed to commemorate this occasion.

As a participant you may arrive as early as Thursday September 7th.  This will give you an opportunity to:

View the NRA award winning display: William Thompson, the Forgotten Patriot a collection of French and Indian War era artifacts and superb reproductions that has taken its owner, a direct descendent of Thompson, 30 years to bring together. In the spring of 1756, Thompson was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the Pa Militia. He was appointed temporary commander at Ft. Lyttleton & participated in the Armstrong Expedition to Kittanning.  Promoted to captain, he commanded Ft. Louden, assisted in building Forbes Road, and was in charge of communications over the 200 miles between Carlisle & Ft. Pitt.

Shop among 2 blocks of venders set up for Antiquing Along The Allegheny in Kittanning’s beautiful River Front Park

Watch the play written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of “The Battle of Kittanning”

Saturday: encampment & sutler’s row opens to the public at 10AM.

A Fashion Show to help educate the public about period clothing.

A Parade depicting Armstrong’s Battalion will march thru Kittanning & into camp accompanying the hearty soles who have completed all or part of the 125 mile trek over the original route taken from Ft. Shirley to Kittanning (trek participants leave Shirleysburg, Pa on August 28. Contact Mike Slease: tmbandb@evenlink.com for info)

Four scheduled scenarios will give women, infants, children and teenage reenactors an opportunity to join the “Men at Arms” to participate in the planned scenarios & a scripted battle reenactment. Camp closes to public 4PM

Saturday evening meal provided for your enjoyment.

Sunday:  Dawn!?!? Yes, a dawn reenactment of the Battle of Kittanning; a surprise attack on the sleepy native village! We invite the women, children & young teens to portray village inhabitants & experience the excitement & confusion of the attack on, defense of, and orderly evacuation of the village. A repeat performance at 1:00PM will enable us to close the encampment shortly after 3PM to facilitate your demobilization and departure.
