My backpack

Back to My Stuff

In 2003, several of us Rangers walked the 100 mile Crown Point Road from the Fort at No. 4 (Charlestown, NH) to Crown Point (NY). It took us nearly 6 days.  Prior to that, I didn't have anything respectable for carrying stuff on my back, so Wade Stoner made me this backpack. He said he used as his model a description of people having modified haversacks to look like backpacks as we know them now, so he started with a haversack design and attached two straps rather than one.

It is made out of sturdy linen and is lined. The front closes with three brass button. Below the flap on the front, he hand-sewed heavy leather loops for attaching smaller bundles. You can see in the picture on the left that I have two ties for an overshirt or jacket or my regimental.

On the back (shown at right), he attached to the shoulder straps two long leather straps with buckles, that are long enough to hold a big bedroll, and are adjustable, of course.  Also, on the shoulder straps, he attached sheepskin to prevent the straps from cutting and chafing while we marched the Crown Point Road.

The photos below show me on the first day of the trek, so you can see how my backpack worked.
